Items and stories and histories being sought for Time Capsule.
Tuolumne County citizens are being urged to contribute small items, stories, and histories for a Time Capsule to recall our rich heritage, capture some moments today and thoughtfully consider the future of our community.
The Time Capsule will be placed in the 9/11 Global War on Terrorism Memorial which will be built on the front lawn of the Tuolumne Township Veterans Memorial Hall. The Memorial is a project of Keith Dale Wann Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4748 which meets in the Hall. Aaron Rasmussen, a native of Tuolumne and an Iraq War veteran is Commander of Post 4748 and along with Vietnam Veteran Frank M. Smart, co-chairs the project. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017 and the projected dedication date is set for Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017.
“This Time Capsule is one of the most exciting parts of the 9/11 Memorial project,” said Smart who has chaired projects to build Memorials at the County Library and the VA Clinic. The selected opening date for the Time Capsule has been set for Sept. 11, 2101, the 100th anniversary of the attacks on New York, the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93 in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. “None of us will be around to see it opened but it is great to think about what that day might be like. What will America, California and Tuolumne County look like then,” Smart said.
The Time Capsule Committee is looking for newspapers, magazines, photos and other memorabilia from the past, the present and essays about the past and future.
